Ratings and players

20-80 scale — The scouting scale used for every rating. 50 is roughly major league average, 80 is elite and rare, 20 is a clear weakness. See how player ratings work.

Current rating — How good a player is right now at a given tool.

Potential (ceiling) — How good a player could become. It is your scouting department’s projection, not a guarantee. See scouting accuracy.

Tool — A single rated ability: contact, power, eye, fielding, speed, arm for hitters; stuff, movement, command for pitchers.

Work ethic — A personality trait that is one of the strongest drivers of player development.

Front office

Farm system — Your minor league organization, where prospects develop before reaching the majors.

Free agency — The market for unsigned players. Contract demands are shaped by a player’s value and personality.

Scouting accuracy — How close a scouting report is to a player’s true underlying ratings. See scouting accuracy.

Gameplay and stats

Play-by-play — The pitch-by-pitch account of a simulated game, the source of every box score. See how baseball simulation works.

Platoon split — The difference in a player’s performance against left-handed versus right-handed opponents.

OPS — On-base plus slugging. A quick, popular measure of a hitter’s overall offensive output.

WAR — Wins Above Replacement. An estimate of a player’s total value over a freely available replacement-level player.

Box score — The full statistical summary of a single game.

Reading the tables

The roster, scouting, and leaderboard tables abbreviate their column headers. Every rating below uses the 20-80 scale.

OVR - Overall: the player’s current all-around quality, one number.

POT / CEIL - Potential (ceiling): how good he could become. A scouting projection, not a promise.

CON - Contact: how well a hitter puts the bat on the ball.

POW - Power: raw over-the-fence and extra-base pop.

EYE - Plate discipline: pitch recognition and walk rate.

SPD - Speed: raw footspeed and baserunning.

BAB - BABIP rating: how often his balls in play fall for hits.

STF - Stuff: a pitcher’s swing-and-miss quality.

CTL - Control: a pitcher’s walk avoidance.

MOV - Movement: how well a pitcher suppresses hard contact.

STM - Stamina: a pitcher’s workload ceiling before he tires.

vL / vR - Platoon shift: how a hitter’s ratings move against left-handed or right-handed pitching, in 20-80 points.

CND - Conditioning: how fresh a player is for the next game (fresh, steady, or tired). Tired bodies get pulled for subs.

B/T - Bats / Throws.

FV - Future value: a scout’s fogged one-number grade on a prospect or target. Your team’s read, not the truth.

Band - The confidence band around a fogged grade: the range your scouts believe the true grade sits in.

Conf - Scouting confidence in a fogged grade: Exact and High are firm, Low and Guess are soft.

Sal / AAV - Salary this season / average annual value across the whole contract.

PA - Plate appearances.

IP - Innings pitched.

WHIP - Walks plus hits per inning pitched. Lower is better.

K/9 and BB/9 - Strikeouts and walks per nine innings.

wRC+ - Weighted runs created versus the league, where 100 is average and higher is better.

FIP - Fielding-independent pitching: an ERA-scale number built only from strikeouts, walks, and home runs.

IL - The injured list (10-day or 60-day).
