Player development is driven by a layer of attributes that sits beneath what you see on the player card. The displayed ratings are a summary. The development engine reads the full underlying model.

What drives growth

Several named factors decide how fast a prospect closes the gap to his ceiling: his age, his work ethic and competitive drive, the quality of the competition he is facing, his playing time and role, his coaching and facilities, and his health. These combine. A young hitter with elite work ethic who is being genuinely challenged at the level above him is in the best possible position to grow.

Work ethic is one of the strongest levers in the system. A prospect with high work ethic can develop meaningfully faster than an identical prospect who coasts, on the order of an estimated 10 to 20 percent quicker progress in the right conditions, and in the best cases he can push past the ceiling a scout projected for him. A prospect with poor work ethic tends to stall well short of his talent, and in some cases regresses.

Two things managers miss

First, a player who is dominating a level he has already outgrown is often developing slowly, because he is not being pushed. Moving him up, even before the stat line demands it, can be the faster path.

Second, development is never guaranteed. Sometimes it clicks late and a player jumps a full tier in a single season. Sometimes a high ceiling is simply never reached. That uncertainty is intentional. It is how player development actually works in a real organization, and modeling it honestly is part of what makes this the most advanced baseball simulation built.
